Who could believe
winter could have arrived so quickly. Here we are, its
December and next years golf season is many months away. So what can we do to keep working on
our swings while this cold weather keeps us off the links ? For
all of us serious golfers its Mirror Work. What is Mirror Work and why is it important for our
swings ? Tour players are constantly using Mirrors in their hotel
room to work on swing positions. As we look into the Mirror we have the ability to feel what we
are seeing. That is a powerful combination.
Some of our best
practice sessions will be done in front of a Mirror and will not require us to hit a golf ball. In a
swing lesson you are being taught important positions that every
golfer needs to learn. Once you understand the positions you must get your muscles to repeat the
moves and I firmly believe the best way to achieve this is to see
and feel your swing working with a Mirror. As far as I am concerned, I would like my swing to repeat
the proper positions. I have no interest in making a swing at
a golf ball unless I feel confident that my swing can repeat the correct fundamentals. Working
with a Mirror gives me the best opportunity to achieve this and
I believe it can help you as well.
So how do we work in
front of a Mirror ? First, you must have some knowledge
of the golf swing so that you know what you are looking to see. The best
way to receive this knowledge is through your local PGA Professional. If you already have received
good information your work with a Mirror can begin, if you
need some instruction please get with a PGA Professional as soon as possible or if you don’t have
a PGA Professional you can contact any of our professionals at
Experienced Golf Center Teaching Academy and we will be happy to get you started right away.
All right, lets get
down to business. Since Mirror work will be done primarily indoors
and most ceilings are only about eight feet high you probably will need to use a short club. Just
take an old club and have it cut down. There are three positions
I try to look at using a Mirror. Face-On, Down The Line Back-Swing and Down The Line
Follow-Through.

Down The Line Back-Swing
|
Check
your address position, distance from the ball and posture.
Back-Swing:
Head remains fairly steady,
body rotating, arm between your shoulder and neck, shaft on plane.
Down-Swing:
Steady head, club shaft being put into the slot under plane.
|
|
Back-Swing:
Head remains fairly steady, body rotating, weight transferring
in the back swing, shaft in proper position.
Down-Swing:
Steady head, club shaft being put into the slot, right side turning
into the ball.
Impact:
Head still steady behind the ball, weight is starting to transfer over
to the front foot, shaft in proper position, hands slightly ahead.
|
Face-On
Check
your address position, ball position and posture.

 |
 |
Down The Line Follow-Through
Check
your address position, distance from the ball and posture.
Follow-Through:
Head remains fairly steady just past impact, body
rotating, arm between your shoulder and neck, shaft on plane just like the
back swing. Head now moves with shoulder rotation, weight transferring over to the
front foot, now balanced with a fully rotated finish with the shaft running
through the ears just like HOGAN. Love it :)
